On the night of June 11th of 1971 the President of Chile, Salvador Allende, gathered together with thousands of people in the mining city of Rancagua. The main reason behind this was to celebrate the project of copper nationalization which had been approved that morning in the National Congress. More than thirty years after this event which imbued many with pride and satisfaction in having been able to recover for Chileans their main source of export and raw material, the situation is quite the opposite. Nowadays 65,5% of all copper production is in the hands of foreign capital corporations with a minimum taxation. In this brief essay we will attempt to explain how both the phenomena of the nationalization and privatization of the Chilean copper industry occurred.
